In 2017 SpaceX unveiled its plan to use the Starship program not only as an interplanetary transportation vehicle but also for earth to earth transportation.

Maybe it sounded far-fetched then, but SpaceX is building two floating spaceports right now. The plan is to start launching from the platforms as early as next year.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared details on the progress of Deimos and Phobos (named after the two moons of Mars), two oil rigs that SpaceX purchased earlier this year to transform them into floating launch and landing sites.

The goal is to be in all major cities and connect them in less than an hour.

SpaceX is now in the process of getting ready for its first orbital flight test, which will include flying Starship atop Super Heavy for the first time, and recovery of the Starship following the test after it splashes down off the coast of Hawaii.
